GAME JOURNAL

June 8, 2009

I worked all weekend on a side scrolling tutorial I found on Yo Yo Games which now produces GameMaker. I made a horizontal scrolling game in space where you shoot aliens. I know the graphics aren't that great. I was just trying to whip some aliens together so I could make the game! I hope the Art Institute can help my drawing skills! Anyway, I hope you enjoy! I've added a video on Youtube too. My kids and I haven't been able to beat it yet, but I didn't want to make it too easy just so we can beat it. If we find it impossible though, I will upload a slightly easier one later, hopefully with better graphics. Right now I just want to work on more tutorials so I can get an idea how to make DIFFERENT types of games. It was pointed out to me recently that my games are pretty much just point and click. (Although much more complicated to make!) So this side scrolling game is a different type for me to make.

I used My Screen Recorder to record several more games for YouTube. It is the best desktop recorder I found so far. It records sounds and video perfectly. Unfortunately it is shareware and puts a big logo across the center of the recording until you pay the $40 registration fee. It was the only one that would work for me though. I also applied for the Art Institute. I know have a BS in CIS, but I need to improve my graphics if I want to work in games. I hope this helps! I'll be looking scholarships now!

I just finished debugging the Memory game this morning. I've uploaded it under VB games. ENJOY!

Hello,I'm trying to get a good portfolio going here. I've tried a few different looks over the last few weeks and my husband has been offering a lot of suggestions. He showed me some that he likes and it looks like I will need to learn ASP.Net next. I know VB 2005 somewhat. Just take a look at some of the games I've worked on. So hopefully this won't be too hard. I was supposed to learn JAVA so I could get into this college that offers Computer Science degrees (Bachelors and Masters) online. I'm still a little hesitant about that for the next step though. Since that is such a big investment I will focus on learning personal skills for now. Knowing ASP.net will only strengthen the Bachelors in Computer Information Systems that already have.

I'm still working on some card designs for the memory game. I still need to fix the bugs and then I can release it on this website!

The game scholarship has been extended another week so it ended today instead. Now we have to wait until 29th to see if my daughter won.

My memory game is almost complete. I had some complications trying to use control arrays. VB 2005 doesn't like them and you have to code them by hand. I finally decided it wasn't worth the aggravation and just coded the whole thing without control arrays. I still have an array for my variable though. I made 3 different levels. The first level barely scrambles the 10 spelling words entered at the beginning. The second level truly randomizes the words so the player has to hunt for the match on the opposite side of the screen. The third level randomizes the cards across the screen like a true memory game. Unfortunately when my son tested it, the 3rd level was causing the words to show up more than twice and sometimes in odd numbers making it impossible to beat. I guess I have some debugging to do. I'm pretty proud of myself though because the actual coding only took 2 weeks and once I got over control arrays I was done in about 2 days. I even added a shuffle option for all 3 levels so the player can make it harder or easier without reentering the words! That was my son's idea. Yeah! I'll make game makers out of them!

I spent last night making some cool pictures in Photoshop. I think I will add them to the memory game for card designs!

We entered my daughter into a scholarship for a game camp in Atlanta. She finally chose a game to write about and I think she did a good job. We just have to wait until May 22nd for the winners to be announced!

My son came home and wanted to play a game with his spelling words. I suggested scrabble tiles but he wanted to do a memory game. The thought of cutting his words out (10 of them) twice every week made me see stars. I suggested making a computer game of it using VB. He liked the idea, so lets see how this goes. Its been awhile since I programmed!
